The Book of Life

scene from the book of life movie

Last night the Rock, Pebbles and I went to see the movie The Book of Life.

Why, yes, The Book of Life did come out at Halloween. But we like to wait for movies to come to our local $2 theater. We’re extremely patient movie patrons. And also thrifty, which is code for poor.

But I digress.

If you haven’t yet seen The Book of Life I highly recommend that you do. With  amazing animation and breathtaking colors, the storyline is built around the Mexican celebration of The Day of the Dead. Which I used to think was a really creepy holiday until I understood its meaning.

I won’t give an explanation of The Day of the Dead or a movie review here because you can consult your favorite search engine for that. I do highly recommend the all-knowing Oracle Google for your internet searches, though. He knows all and sees all, in my humble opinion. But if you prefer a different search engine I promise not to hold it against you.

But, again, I digress.

Pebbles mommy, Sapphire, our daughter #2, died when Pebbles was almost three-years-old. Although we’ve tried mightily to keep her memory alive for Pebbles it’s been a struggle because Pebbles has no memories of her own of her mother.

Pebbles has shown little interest in photos of her mommy and the stories we tell her about Sapphire. The Rock and I are the only mommy and daddy Pebbles has ever known.

Manolo meets his mother in The Land of the RememberedBut tonight, at the point in the movie when Manolo dies and, in The Land of the Remembered, meets his own mother who died when he was young, I looked over and saw tears in Pebbles eyes.

Actual tears. Silent tears. Without screams.

I reached over and took her hand and she said, “That makes me think of Momma.”

Which is exactly what I was thinking.

So we sat there together, in the darkened theater, holding hands. And we both cried.

Wondering who The Rock and Pebbles are? Want to know
why we’re raising Pebbles? And who the heck is OCD Louie?

That is so sad, but also revealing, to know that Pebbles does remember something. 🙂

  2. So sad, so terrribly sad. I cannot think of any loss worse than losing one’s child, unless it is a young child losing her mother…

Have you ever been able to write about Sapphire on your blog, or is that a no-touch subject? Just wondering because I would read that post, if so…

Due to really, really crappy eyesight I cannot go systematically through your blog much as I wish I could but would love pointers to important posts, esp important posts to you…even if they are not the posts that I think I should read…So if Sapphire is off limits in your writings, I would love to know which are YOUR favorite posts! I know that often the posts I write on Wagblog that are most important to me sometimes go over with my readers like a falling water balloon i.e they plop and splat!)

    Best Wishes and Be Well,

PS I have hopes to go indoor skydiving in Montreal (still have to check into costs and reservations but I have someone to take me who loves Canada) in the spring when snow won’t be able to suddenly or unexpectedly disrupt our plans. I still cannot thank you and my lucky stars enough that I found your “Magneto” page and discovered the amazing wonders of IDSD!!! Who’da thunk? (maybe it’s kinda old hat to your son and others, but to me it still seems like a complete miracle!)

    • Even now, Pam, after gazillions of jumps and several years as a wind tunnel instructor, Magneto still loves it. I don’t think it’s become old hat for him yet. I do plan to write more posts about his adventures. About all of my kids’ adventures. And my husband’s, as well. His could actually fill a book.

Sapphire is definitely not an off-limits topic for me. I’m one of those people who heals best by talking about my sorrow. Her death ripped a hole in my heart and to my astonishment, poetry came flooding out. Writing poetry is something I’ve never done until she died. All the poems and other things I’ve written about her are published on a website I created. But I haven’t figured out yet how to share them here and maintain my family’s anonymity. But I will. I promise.

The posts here that mean the most to me, so far, would be the ones about Pebbles, I think. In the sidebar under the title “For people who are okay with random. I. AM. SO. JEALOUS.” select the Family category. Or type Pebbles in the search bar. And even though he’s an incredible nuisance who totally wrecks my life I really like my posts about OCD Louie. You’ll find him in the OCD category.

Umppphh, right in the gut with that one. I can tune out pointless screaming but heartfelt tears are tough. I can tell that she is lucky to have landed with you and I definitely believe we live on through our children. I bet all three of you are bouncing around that little screaming child’s head.

    • LOL! Screaming child indeed! Oh, how that child can scream! I envy your ability to ignore pointless screaming. I’ve never been able to and Pebbles knows it. I’m pretty sure she uses that knowledge to control me. The Rock and I know she’s very lucky to have landed with us. And we feel really, really blessed – most of the time – to have the honor of raising her for Sapphire. But we *are* old. And she *does* scream. A lot. But, yeah, those quiet heartfelt tears, the ones she was trying to hide from me, they got me right in the gut, too.
